Newspapers

For those of you with a Contra Costa Library card, you have access to the New York Times!  Newspapers are a great primary source if they are talking about an event, or if they have the text of speeches and such.  They are also good for finding out the general news of the day so that people could be better informed.

Here are some free historical newspapers that happen to be online:

Chronicling America - "Search America's historic newspaper pages from 1789-1963 or use the U.S. Newspaper Directory to find information about American newspapers published between 1690-present."

Elephind.com: Search the World's Historical Newspaper Archive - The purpose of Elephind.com is to make it possible to search all of the world’s free digital newspapers from one place and at one time. A work in progress.

Free Historic U.S. Newspapers by State - From Purdue University.  Many of the links go back to the Chronicling America site, above.

Google Newspaper Archive - Google is no longer scanning newspapers, but those that they did are here.
