Citation Managers

What does EndNote Online do and how do I sign up?

EndNote Online is a citation manager that organizes and stores citation information, it also creates bibliographies and can be used in conjunction with Word or Google Docs for internal citations. It is free for anyone to use.

How to Sign Up for an Account:

  1. Start at the "Log into EndNote Online" page
  2. Click 'Sign up for an Account'
  3. Enter the required information on the left hand side of the menu
  4. Read the terms and click 'I Agree'

In order to use EndNote Basic off-campus, you must first register and login from an IP authenticated workstation.  After twelve months, you are required to login again from an IP authenticated workstation to re-establish your affiliation with SMC and to restore access to styles, filters and online connections. If your account was set up at a different institution, contact the library to change your affiliation to SMC.

Importing citations into EndNote

Add a browser extension that will capture references from the page you are viewing. Log into your EndNote account, navigate to the Download tab and follow the instructions under 'Download Installers'

To export references from EBSCO databases (like Academic Search Complete or ERIC), click on the article title. Select 'Export' from the right-hand toolbar under 'Tools', and choose the way you'd like to export: Direct Export in RIS format, or Direct Export to Endnote Web.

To export a reference from Google Scholar, navigate to the 'Cite' button under the title/abstract of the article.

Then, select EndNote at the bottom of the popup window:

Finally, upload the Google Scholar file into your EndNote Account:

To export references from PubMed to EndNote Online, select 'Send to- Citation Manager' from within the article record.

Download the file to your computer, and then upload the file into your EndNote Online:

Many databases work with EndNote Online in a similar fashion. Within the article record, look for a button that says "Citation" or "Export", download the file to your computer and then upload that same file into your EndNote Online.

'Cite While You Write' Plug-In

Download the program by clicking on the 'Download' tab, and then downloading the version for either Mac or PC. For specific instructions, check out installing CWYW for Mac or Installing CWYW for PC.

You can use the CWYW program in Word by navigating to the Endnote toolbar within Word, where you'll be prompted to enter your log in information. Then select the citation style that best fits your needs. Select 'Insert Citation' and use the search bar to locate the citation you need. From the 'Insert' menu, select the citation you would like to use. The citation will appear where your cursor is, and a full citation will appear at the end of the page.
