This guide serves as a practical resource for Saint Mary's College employees to promote inclusive and respectful language within our campus community. Language reflects our values, and at Saint Mary's, we are committed to fostering an environment where every individual feels recognized, respected, and valued. This guide provides guidance on how to use language thoughtfully and avoid terms or expressions that may unintentionally exclude or marginalize individuals based on race, ethnicity, gender, sexual orientation, ability, and other aspects of identity.
Using a clear, adaptable approach, the guide offers practical recommendations and examples that help employees use inclusive terminology in everyday interactions, written communications, and college materials. Sections include guidance on person-first language, avoiding stereotypes, respecting individuals’ preferred identifiers, and addressing microaggressions sensitively and constructively. Additionally, we encourage a mindset of continuous learning and openness, acknowledging that inclusive language evolves over time, just as our understanding and respect for diversity grow.
Our goal is to create a more welcoming and equitable community by encouraging conscious language choices that reflect Saint Mary's values of compassion, inclusivity, and dignity for all. This guide is adapted from the Inclusive Language guide created by Cal State East Bay.
