English 342: Shakespeare

This Research Guide guides you through the Library's resources for literary research on Shakespeare.

Evaluating the Sources You Found

Reminders:

  • Sources should be scholarly
    • i.e., by an academic and published by an academic publisher; not some rando writing about Shakespeare for some content farm on the Web
  • Sources should probably be published after 1990
    • otherwise it's likely to be difficult to read and/or not incorporating the latest theory and scholarship on Shakespeare
  • Sources should not primarily be about an adaptation or production of your play
    • For example, "“We Are Such Stuff”: Absolute Feminine Power vs. Cinematic Myth-Making in Julie Taymor's Tempest (2010)" would probably not be the best source for this assignment, since it's about a movie version
  • Sources should not be about how your play relates to themes in another work
    • For example, "A Reference to Shakespeare's Othello in Fadia Faqir's Willow Trees Don't Weep" would probably not be the best source for this assignment, since it's primarily about a book you and your classmates probably haven't read
  • Sources should not be book reviews
    • However, if you find a glowing review of a book of essays about your play, you might want to see if the Library has that book!
