How to Do Library Research

Gallagher Library Workshop

The three databases below contain different kinds of reports, news, and opinions about climate change, housing, drones, organic food, and more topics. Try searching each of these for your topic to get a sense of:

  1. the established facts on your issue
  2. key terms and events
  3. the unresolved debates
  4. questions that arise

As you look through your sources, ask yourself:

  • WHO would have the expertise to write knowledgeably about your topic? (Then look at the authors of your sources.)
  • WHAT are your sources saying? WHAT kinds of evidence do your sources use? WHAT do you still need to inform your essay? (Then change your keywords or database accordingly. Think about looking for alternative viewpoints too, not just sources that back up what you already think.)
  • WHEN would the most relevant sources be published? (Then use the filters to narrow down the dates.)
  • WHERE would the most relevant kinds of articles be published? (Then choose an appropriate database or publication to search in.)
