MLA Citations

Easy Bib is a great tool, but it's important not to follow it uncritically, because sometimes it will provide citations that are wrong. When using Easy Bib or any other citation generator, make sure to check your citations against an authority.

The library has physical copies of the MLA Handbook for your use, but we also provide a useful cheat sheet for common MLA-style citations. For writing taken from the Web, you may also find the examples below to be helpful:

Newspaper/Magazine Article found Online:

Form: Last Name, First Name, Middle Initial. "Title of Article." Name of Publication, Date published in Day Month Year format, URL. Date Accessed.

Example: Black, Jane. "Long Misunderstood, Appalachian Food Finds the Spotlight." The New York Times, 9 Sept. 2019, www.nytimes.com/2019/09/09/ dining/appalachian-food.html. Accessed 14 Sept. 2019.

Website with No Author:

Form: “Title of Web Page.” Title of Website, Publisher, Date published in Day Month Year format, URL. Date Accessed.

Example: "Platform." The Movement for Black Lives, n.d., policy.m4bl.org/ platform/. Accessed 1 May 2019.

Note: Use "n.d." when no date is available.

Scholarly Article:

Form: Last Name, First Name. "Title of Article." Title of Journal, Volume, no. Issue, Year, pp. xx-xxx.

Example: Guignard, Florence Pasche. "A Gendered Bun in the Oven: The Gender-reveal Party as a New Ritualization during Pregnancy." Studies in Religion, 44, no. 4, 2015, pp. 479-500.

Blog Post:

Form: Last Name, First Name. “Title of Post.” Blog Name, Publisher Name (if different from name of blog), Date published in Day Month Year format, URL. Date Accessed. 

Example: Orgiu, Roberto. "Are You Reading That Story? We Won't Distract You." Open, The New York Times, 9 May 2019, open.nytimes.com/reducing-distractions-we-dim-the-android-status-bar-when-users-are-reading-55be5cd7fcb. Accessed 10 Aug. 2019.

Tweet:

Form: @handle. "Text of tweet." Twitter, Date published in Day Month Year format, URL

APA Citations

The same rules apply for APA style. The library has physical copies of the APA Style Guide, as well as a cheat sheet of commonly cited kinds of sources. For writing taken from the Web, you may also find the examples below to be helpful. Note that ways of citing each kind of source may be close but subtly different:

Newspaper Article found Online:

Form: Last Name, First Initial., Middle Initial. (Year, Month Day). Title of article. Name of Publication, Retrieved from URL.

Example: Black, J. (2019, September 9). Long misunderstood, Appalachian food finds the spotlight. The New York Times, retrieved from www.nytimes.com/2019/ 09/09/dining/appalachian-food.html. 

Magazine Article found Online:

Form: Last Name, F. M. (Year, Month). Title of article. Name of Publication, Volume Number(Issue Number), retrieved from URL

Website with No Author:

Form: Page title. (Year, Month Day). Retrieved from URL

Note: Use "(n.d.)" when no date is available. 

Scholarly Article:

Form: Last Name 1, F1. M1., Last Name 2, F2. M2., & Last Name 3, F3. M3. (Year). Title of article. Name of PublicationVolume Number(Issue Number), xx-xxx.
