Finding Reviews or Criticism

Try out some of the databases in the box below.

  • To find reviews, look for the "review" limiter in most library databases.
  • For criticism, try limiting to "scholarly journals."
  • Or, try searching for the author's name (lastname, firstname) as a subject rather than a keyword.

Advanced Database Search Tips

When searching the databases, use AND to connect different concepts, and use OR to search alternate terms at the same time:

Search for toni morrison in one search box and folklore or folktales or witches in the next box

Use * [asterisk] to find multiple variants on a root with a single search (e.g., child* finds child, children, childhood):

Search with poet followed by an asterisk, and palestin followed by an asterisk

Use "  " [quotation marks] to make sure your results have the words of a phrase or title in that same order:

search for digital humanities in quotation marks

Click "check for full text" if there's no direct link to the full text in the database:

database search result with an arrow pointing to the red "check for full text" icon underneath
