Learn about the Library's streaming videos and considerations when using videos in your teaching.

How to Share Videos in Canvas

To share a link to a Kanopy video with your students, make sure to use the "share link." Here's how: 

  1. In Kanopy, click on a video
  2. Click "Share" below the video.
  3. Copy the share link or embed code.
  4. You can now add it as a link or embedded video in Canvas. See Canvas instructions for embedding media.

To assign just a clip of the video:

  1. Click "Sign Up" in the upper right. Or, if you already created a Kanopy login, click "Log In." Complete the signup/login process.
  2. Click on a video.
  3. Click "Create Clip."
  4. Create a playlist or add to an existing playlist.
  5. Click "Edit Playlist."
  6. Click "Edit" next to the video. 
  7. Specify a start and end time.
  8. Save playlist.
  9. Click "Share" for a playlist share link you can add to Canvas.

To share a video from an Alexander Street database (Academic Video Online, Dance Online, LGBT Studies in Video) with your students, make sure to share the permanent link (permalink) or use the embed code to embed the video in Canvas. Here's how: 

To share a Permalink:

  1. Click on a video
  2. Click on "Share" near the top of the screen
  3. Copy the permalink or embed code and add it to Canvas.  How to embed media in Canvas

To assign just a clip of the video:

  1. Click "Clips" near the top of the screen.
  2. Click "Create Clip."
  3. Enter a title and description, and select the time range.
  4. Click "only visible to you" and change the selection from "Private" to "Institutional."
  5. Find the clip on the right, click on the three dots, and click "Share."
  6. Copy the permalink and add it to Canvas. 

To share a video from Films on Demand with your students, make sure to share the Record URL instead of the link that appears in your browser. Here's how: 

To link or embed a video in Canvas:

  1. Choose a video.
  2. Under the video, click "Share."
  3. Click the "Embed/Link" tab.
  4. Click "Copy" for the Record URL or Segment URL, if available (sharing the Record URL shares a link to the entire video) 
  5. Add the link or embed it in Canvas.  How to embed media in Canvas

Create and Share a Playlist

  1. In the upper right, click "Log In."
  2. Under the video you want to add to your playlist, click "Add to +"
  3. Click the tab for "Playlist."
  4. Choose whether to add the full video or just a segment.
  5. Add to an existing or new playlist. 
  6. Scroll up and click "Go to my content."
  7. To the right of your playlist, click the "Actions" menu, then click "Share."
  8. Click "Embed/Link Playlist."
  9. Copy the "Record URL" and add it to Canvas.

Embed a Quiz in a Video

Films on Demand lets you embed quiz questions (multiple choices, true/false, or short answer) in a video to make sure your students are reflecting on the content as they watch. Please see these instructions from Films on Demand/Infobase on adding a quiz to a video.
