Professional associations are great ways to learn a field, make connections, and build networks. Most professional associations have deeply discounted rates for students, as well as scholarship opportunities and career advice.

Key Professional Associations in Communication 

  • American Communication Association - The national professional organization of scholars, students, and practitioners in the field of communication.
  • International Communication Association - The purposes of the Association are (1) to provide an international forum to enable the development, conduct, and critical evaluation of communication research; (2) to sustain a program of high quality scholarly publication and knowledge exchange; (3) to facilitate inclusiveness and debate among scholars from diverse national and cultural backgrounds and from multi-disciplinary perspectives on communication-related issues; and (4) to promote a wider public interest in, and visibility of, the theories, methods, findings and applications generated by research in communication and allied fields.
  • National Communication Association - The largest national organization dedicated to communication
  • Western States Communication Association - A group specific to scholars in the western United States
  • Society for Cinema & Media Studies - Devoted to the scholarly study of Film, Television, Video & New Media
  • Society of Professional Journalists - Includes sources pertaining to current controversies over journalism codes of ethics.
